The work of Alexandra Bachzetsis unfolds at the intersection of dance, performance, the visual arts and theatre, generating a conflation of the spaces in which the body, as an artistic and critical apparatus, can manifest. Much of her work involves choreographies of the body and how popular culture provides source material for gestures, expressions, identification, and fantasies as we continually create and re-create our bodies and the way we identify. In her aptly titled solo performance Gold, Bachzetsis continues to explore the proverbial gold standard of the libidinal economy that buttresses contemporary visual culture - the eroticized female body. Propelled, among others, by a riveting dance track courtesy of Missy Elliott, Kelis and Khia, Gold deftly plays around the ambiguous choreographic vernacular of hip-hop and R&B, invoking reflection on the stereotypical representations of women in contemporary popular culture.

Alexandra Bachzetsis is a Greek-Swiss artist, performer and choreographer. Born in 1974 in Zürich, Bachzetsis initially studied in Germany and Belgium before completing a postgraduate theatre and dance course at Das Arts, Amsterdam. Whilst training, she collaborated on performances with dance companies Sasha Waltz & Guests and Les Ballets C. de la B. Since 2001, Bachzetsis has worked independently, producing and presenting her work in theatres and contemporary art venues. Bachzetsis' work constitutes an inquiry into genres of performing arts, choreography techniques, and forms of scenic behaviour. Her main interest lies in the codes that govern gestures, both in everyday life and on stage. In 2007, Bachzetsis received the Migros Kulturprozent Jubilee Award and co-founded the artist collective Company, together with Lies Vanborm and Tina Bleuler.
